Television and Movies:
- The BBC-produced Sherlock has seen its first three episodes aired on our local PBS station, and it is the best television going. I can't wait for more. Oh, and how much like Sherlock is Doctor Who?! The should nix the love interest and have a season or two with a guy companion: it works really well here, and I think DW needs to mix it up about now.
- Speaking of DW, I finally watched the last two episodes of season five (I think that's right) and, well, I'm a fanboy for this one and I'll tolerate a lot. This season seemed quite safe, overall, not a lot of chances taken. The crack in the wall recurring element was another Bad Wolf, and there was way too much of the Doctor talking long, loud, and fast... and then they run somewhere to fix things. Tom Baker did this best, and frequently the plots were thin, paltry things, but I at least understood what was going on. This season, to hell if I understand why the tentative love birds kissing while touching the control board in that invisible space ship saved the day, but hey: I was so glad that they finally hooked up that I didn't care. This is a problem... DW should be about ethical dilemmas and crazy alien creatures, not soap opera love. Amy is a saucy companion, if a bit slight compared to Martha or River Song. My favorite companion ever was Perri. I still recall that pink top. But I digress.
- Not normally an anime watcher, but I kept hearing how great Cowboy Bebop is, and am making my way through the series. It is odd, but compelling. Love the intro song, incidentally.
- Monsters: Good. That other alien invasion movie out right now: not so much.
- I am watching and enjoying AMC's The Walking Dead. A little soap operatic, and if they try to basically do the Battlestar Galactica Reboot in zombie apocalypse mode, then this will quickly decline. We'll see how it goes. So far, so good.
- The Vicar of Dibley was one of the Britcoms I endured when I was younger to get at the ones I actually liked. Now that I'm older, I find it to be second only to As Time Goes By, starring Judi Dench.
- Though we tend to all love Wes Anderson in our house, The Fantasic Mr. Fox missed our attention when it was out. Recently viewed on cable, I found it super cool. My favorite scene is this incidental moment when they see a wolf off on the distance from the road. Odd, serious-silly, and full of telling banter. Another thing that makes me smile.
Any great television or movies that deserve more attention? Let us know!
